'Golfgate' case adjourned

A case involving Galway independent TD Noel Grealish, former Senator Donie Cassidy and two hoteliers in Clifden, who allegedly contravened a section of the Health Act at aclifden court golf dinner last August, has been adjourned until 28 October.

Mr Grealish of Oranmore, Galway; Mr Cassidy of Castlepollard, Co Westmeath; and father and son, John and James Sweeney, who own the Stationhouse Hotel in Clifden, are each facing the offence of organising or causing to be organised an event which contravened the 1947 Health Act, which was designed to prevent or limit the spread of Covid-19.
The event in question was an Oireachtas Golf Society dinner on 19 August 2020, attended by 81 people.
Disclosure orders were sought on behalf of all four accused at Clifden District Court yesterday..

Judge Marie Keane was told three days would need to be set aside for the hearing and that a special court date should be fixed.
Judge Keane adjourned the matter until October 28 when the case will come up for mention again, and a firm date can be fixed for hearing.
The four men did not appear in court today - they are not obliged to once they are represented by their solicitors, who dealt the matters on their behalf.
