GAA Sparks Visitor Surge

 Travel interest to Dublin has increased 79% for this weekend’s showpiece GAA Football All-Ireland Senior Championship Final between Dublin and Kerry, according to hotel search website trivago.ie.
 Hotel searches made by Irish holidaymakers for a hotel stay this weekend (19th September to 20th September) were compared to searches made for a hotel stay the weekend before (12th September to 13th September). The data is based on searches made during a six month period from 16 March to 16 September.
 Travel interest to Dublin from the UK also increased by 16% during the period. Earlier this month trivago reported on a 61% surge in Dublin hotel prices the night before the final.

Chefs Course in Thomastown

The School of Food in Thomastown invites all hotels, restaurants and other food operators to consider enrolling existing or potential employees to achieve a QQI Level 5 qualification in Professional Cookery. This new program is designed with a vocational approach to the practical application of classroom kitchen learning.
  The School of Food is also developing a QQI Level 6 program with Carlow Kilkenny ETB to provide a progression pathway for those successfully completing the Level 5 course. Since the School’s Chef Training Program is certified on the National Framework of Qualifications, graduates from the School are also free to continue their culinary education at any National Learning Institution.

Powerscourt Gets AA Gong

 
Powerscourt Hotel Resort and Spa has been named the AA Hotel of the Year, t. Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring TD presented the award to General Manager David Webster in a ceremony held in Dublin.
 The team at Powerscourt have been praised by the AA’s Inspectorate for consistently applying superb standards throughout the Co. Wicklow property.
 “It is an old hotel and a new one,” said AA Director of Consumer Affairs Conor Faughnan. “Old in that the location has been globally renowned for many years, and new in that custody passed to a fantastic new team not even two years ago. In that time they have made huge strides.”

Michelin Stars for Loam and Greenhouse

Loam in Galway and The Greenhouse in Dublin have each been awarded a Michelin Star.
 Seven Irish restaurants have retained their stars from previous years.

 In a major surprise Thornton's at the Fitzwilliam Hotel has lost its stars, as has Bot Appetit in Malahide.
 Loam's head chef and owner is Enda McEvoy, formerly of Aniar. The restaurant only opened last year. House in Ardmore, Aniar in Galway, Campagne and Lady Helen in Kilkenny and Dublin's Chapter One and L'Écrivan each retained their Michelin star status, while Patrick Guilbaud retained its two Michelin stars.
  Several Irish restaurants have also been awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand including Adare's 1826, Giovannelli in Killorglin, Kinsale's Bastion, The Copper Hen in Waterford, Cafe Hans in Cashel ,Delahunt, Dublin and Clontarf's Pigeon House.
 
 

Record Midleton Foodfest

The Midleton Food and Drink Festival attracted more than 30,000 people this year – a record number for the festival. The event, which 

midleton159spanned almost two weeks, attracted hundreds of producers, local growers and exhibitors who showcased their produce to the crowds.  

 “This year’s event was the biggest and best year yet – our numbers were double that of 2014 and we are absolutely delighted. The Midleton Food & Drink Festival is a really community event and I would like to thank all of those who helped make it the success it was this year,”said Andrea Gunn, Midleton and Area Chamber of Commerce.
