Fáilte Ireland, in partnership with the Office of Public Works (OPW), has announced a major investment of €4.3 million in four key heritage sites along the Wild Atlantic Way, 

which will enhance the visitor experiences at each location. 

 Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin T.D., visited the Blasket Island Visitor Centre. He was joined by Fáilte Ireland’s Director of Product Development Orla Carroll and OPW Chairman Maurice Buckley and Cllr Cosai Fitzgerald. 

 The investment, which forms part of Fáilte Ireland’s strategic partnership with the OPW, will significantly enhance the visitor experience and views at key locations, with new exhibitions and major upgrades. Fáilte Ireland is providing up to 75% of the funding for the projects from its Capital Grants budget, with the remainder of the funding being provided by the OPW.

 The four heritage sites to benefit from this investment are:

Two American visitors died in a freak accident involving a jaunting car at the Gap of Dunloe in Co Kerry.

They are understood to be from Phoenix, Arizona.

The dead couple werein a group that included the woman’s daughter and son-in-law, and the latter couple’s two children. The party was staying in  Killarney town.

The traditional horse and trap in which they were travelling appears to have suddenly left the road and fell around 20ft. The couple died instantly on the rocks. The horse, which was injured in the incident, was put down.

The jarvey driver was not injured, but is believed to be very shaken by the incident.

 The two-wheeled vehicle has been in use since Victorian times to ferry tourists from Brandon’s Cottage through the dramatic narrow pass in the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks to Kate Kearney’s Cottage.

 

 

Ireland has an opportunity to showcase itself as a tourism destination to some of Canada’s top travel writers, as Fáilte Ireland hosts 28 members of The Society of American

 Travel Writers (SATW) Canada Chapter during their trip to Ireland for the society’s Annual Conference, in Barberstown Castle, County Kildare this week in conjunction with Tourism Ireland.

 Including freelance travel journalists and photographers, staff travel editors and travel publicists from titles such as Lonely Planet, Air Canada Vacations, Fodor’s and the Toronto Star, the Society (SATW) members represent some of the most influential content producers in the Canadian travel industry.

 

More than 1 million Italian commuters are seeing ads for Ireland in a new Tourism Ireland campaign with Aer Lingus.

  The campaign includes around 250 billboard ads on display in metro stations around Milan, which will be seen by an estimated 1.3 million people; it also includes digital advertising. The aim of the campaign is to highlight good value Aer Lingus fares from Milan to Dublin and to drive bookings for the coming months.
