Thorntons Takes Restaurant Gong

The winners of the prestigious FOOD&WINE Magazine Restaurant of the Year Awards in association with Nespresso Business Solutions were announced at a gala luncheon in The InterContinental, Dublin, yesterday. Guests were treated to a five-course meal with perfectly matched wines courtesy of wine distributor Febvre and Company Limited.

Thornton’s Restaurant, owned by one of Ireland’s leading chefs Kevin Thornton, was given the prestigious title of FOOD&WINE Magazine Restaurant of the Year 2015. Celebrating 25 years in business this year, it continues to be one of the most exciting and innovative dining experiences in the country.
Stephen Toman of Ox, Belfast, was not only named overall FOOD&WINE Magazine chef of the year 2015, he also took home the award for Best Chef Ulster. Ox, Belfast also scooped another award for Best Restaurant Ulster for the second year running.
New to the line-up this year was the Special Recognition award given to Mark Moriarty in light of both his personal and professional achievements this year along with representing Irish cuisine on the world stage.
Both Biddy White Lennon and Neven Maguire were inducted into the Hall of Fame. Well-known as a judge on The Great Irish Bake Off, Biddy was recognised for her promotion of food since the mid-80’s through writing recipes, working with large food groups and penning 13 books on Irish food and its history. She is also a founding member of the Irish Food Writers’ Guild.
Regularly appearing on TV and radio, Neven Maguire was recognised for his approachable on screen manner and obvious passion for food making him a household name for Irish cuisine. In addition, he has produced several best-selling cookery books as well as running the family business at the award-winning MacNean House and Restaurant in Blacklion, County Cavan.
Recognising the best Irish restaurants and culinary talent, diners from all over Ireland were invited to nominate their favourite restaurants and chefs for the Awards, with the top entries going forward for deliberation by a national culinary panel of judges, made up of industry experts and national food critics. The national awards for Overall Best Chef and Overall Best Restaurant are put through a further judging process, whereby the entire judging panel vote electronically and in private to ensure a measured choice for these important awards.
Restaurateurs and Chefs from all over Ireland who gathered for the Awards in Dublin’s Intercontinental Hotel, Dublin 4 enjoyed a Champagne Taittinger Reception on arrival.  Febvre wines selected to match each course included: Maison Simonnet-Febvre Saint Bris Burgundy 2014; De Martino Legado Reserva Chardonnay Limari Valley Chile 2013; d’Arenberg d’Arry’s Original Shiraz Grenache 2010 and Warres Otima 10 year old Tawny Port.
