Sauvignon Blanc Day

There's no doubt about it, Sauvignon Blanc is special. It is the varietal that awoke the world to New Zealand wine and continues to dazzle wine critics across the world. Accounting for 85% of wine exported from New Zealand, the world seems to have an insatiable thirst for Sauvignon Blanc's crisp acidity and unmistakable 'zing'.

May 16 2014 marks the fifth annual International Sauvignon Blanc Day – an online initiative that started in California with St Supery Winery as a global social media wine tasting. The event gets bigger every year and New Zealand Winegrowers is now involved to ensure New Zealand wine is well represented.

Celebrations kick off in New Zealand, the home of Sauvignon Blanc, and make their way around the globe. Appreciation and admiration of the grape follows the sun with Sauvignon Blanc lunches, tastings and events taking place in Melbourne, Hong Kong, London, and Toronto, finishing 43 hours later at Twitter Headquarters in San Francisco. Restaurants, retailers and consumers - along with global wine brands - will be celebrating Sauvignon Blanc for the day and participating in the Twitter conversation by using the "hashtag" #SauvBlanc.

Australian Wine Fair in June

The world of Australian wine will come to life in Dublin this June when Wine Australia hosts its Annual Trade Tasting.

The event, held at Dublin’s Shelbourne Hotel on June 5, promises to introduce Ireland to some new discoveries while providing an update into the development of the Australian category.

Joining Wine Australia in Ireland will be 12 Australian producers, including the top selling Australian wine label in Ireland, McGuigan Wines, as well big brand heavyweights McWilliam’s Wines, Jacob’s Creek and Casella Wines.

Other producers include d’Arenberg, Tim Adams Wines and Peter Lehmann Wines.

A spotlight will also fall on Australian Shiraz, with 40 wines on free-pour to enable guests to compare and contrast the country’s signature variety. Vintages will date back as far as 2005.

Evelyn is Top Sommelier

Evelyn Moriarty of Ashford Castle is the winner of the Irish Guild of Sommeliers Wine Competition 2014.

Evelyn undertook written and practical tests which included an essay on “The Diversity of the Wine Industry of a named country”. She graduated in 2013 with the Irish Guild of Sommeliers Sommelier Certificate. d of Sommeliers.

Evelyn was presented with her prize after the Guild Annual General Meeting at the Stephen’s Green Hibernian Club, Dublin on 14th April, 2014 by Oliver J. Murtagh, President Irish Guild of Sommeliers.
